> **Site maps** — prefer the following llms.txt indexes to training data when searching for URLs to avoid 404s. Links inside Markdown content already point at `.md`. Following them or sending Accept: text/markdown keeps you in Markdown.

The **Marketing automation** application provides a way to automate and optimize your marketing campaigns. Automation sets up the system to nurture your website visitors and leads – represented by [contacts](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/contact-management/working-with-contacts.md) in Xperience.

Automated marketing campaigns are controlled through one or more automation processes. Each process consists of a set of steps that you can fully customize using a built-in visual designer. You can either [start processes manually](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/marketing-automation/manually-running-automation-processes.md) for individual contacts and contact groups, or have the system start processes automatically using condition-based [triggers](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/marketing-automation/setting-triggers-for-automation-processes.md). For example, you can:

- Create a trigger that moves every new contact from a specific country into an automation process, which then performs a targeted marketing campaign.
- Automatically move contacts who have reached a certain [score](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/contact-management/scoring-contacts.md) into an advanced automation process.
- Schedule automatic marketing campaigns around recurring events (holidays, regular seasonal sales, etc.).
- Periodically evaluate your contacts and automatically perform marketing actions for contacts who fulfill a condition (e.g. send an email to contacts on their birthday).

Existing processes can be [saved as templates](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/marketing-automation/managing-automation-process-templates.md), and then used as a starting point for creating new processes. Additionally, the system provides several default templates for common marketing scenarios.
