Activities represent actions that your [contacts](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/contact-management/working-with-contacts.md) perform. For example, the system logs activities when visitors view [pages](https://docs.kentico.com/13/managing-website-content/working-with-pages.md), purchase [products](https://docs.kentico.com/13/e-commerce-features/managing-on-line-stores/products.md) or subscribe to [newsletters](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/email-marketing.md). The data gathered in the [activity log](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/managing-your-on-line-marketing-features/contact-management/tracking-contact-activities/viewing-contact-activities.md) allows you to evaluate the behavior of your website's contacts and visitors.

To be able to work with activities in the **Contact management**application, users need to have permissions for the [On-line marketing](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-on-line-marketing-permissions.md#on-line-marketing), [Contact management](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-on-line-marketing-permissions.md#contact-management), and [Activities](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-on-line-marketing-permissions.md#activities) modules.

First, you need to set up tracking of activities for contacts. You can also configure logging of activities for specific pages, users, and certain features:

- [Enable activity tracking](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-activities/enabling-activity-tracking.md)

Furthermore, you can create custom activity types for tracking other actions that contacts perform:

- [Add custom activity types](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-activities/adding-custom-activity-types.md)
- [Log custom activities through the API](https://docs.kentico.com/13/on-line-marketing-features/configuring-and-customizing-your-on-line-marketing-features/configuring-activities/logging-custom-activities-through-the-api.md)
