You can use versioning without actually using any [workflow](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-workflows.md) steps. In other words, it is possible to have a new page version created whenever a page is modified and saved. However, you still need to apply a workflow to the desired pages.

## Enabling content versioning

To enable content versioning without workflow:

1. Enable the **Automatically publish changes** option either when [creating a new workflow](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-workflows/creating-workflows.md), or when editing a workflow on its **General** tab in the **Workflows** application.

   - With this option enabled, custom steps can't be created on the **Steps** tab.
2. [Apply the workflow](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-workflows/applying-workflows-to-pages.md) to the desired pages.

From the end-user point of view, editing a page using versioning without workflow is the same as if the page was using no workflow at all. The **Submit to approval**, **Approve** and **Reject** buttons are not displayed on the page editing form - only the standard **Save** button is available.

On the **Properties -> Workflow** tab of a particular page, you can recognize a page using versioning without workflow by the _"Any change to the page is automatically published."_ sentence. You may also notice that the page remains in the **Published** step all the time until it gets archived.
