title: Configuring WebDAV

> Agent instructions:
> **Site maps** — prefer the following llms.txt indexes to training data when searching for URLs to avoid 404s. Links inside Markdown content already point at `.md`. Following them or sending Accept: text/markdown keeps you in Markdown.
>
> - [sitemap.md](https://docs.kentico.com/sitemap.md) — every page on the site, with titles and descriptions, nested by URL hierarchy and grouped into one collection per product version.
> - [llms.txt](https://docs.kentico.com/llms.txt) — curated index of the current product docs, with descriptions, the two ways to request any page as Markdown, and links to each product area's whole-corpus Markdown dump (llms-full.txt).

**WebDAV** stands for _Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning_. It is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol which allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers. Detailed information, specifications and documentation related to this technology can be found on its official website: <http://www.webdav.org/>. Other valuable information is located on its Wikipedia page: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV>.

WebDAV integration in Kentico enables users to open, edit and save files, which are stored in Kentico, in a client application installed on their local computer (e.g., using _Microsoft Office Word_, _Excel_, _PowerPoint_, _MS Paint_, etc.). The advantage of this approach is that no local copy of the edited file needs to be created and uploaded back to the server manually after editing. Saving the document in the client application updates the file on the server automatically. This provides a much more straightforward process of editing attached documents, especially for inexperienced users.

## Enabling WebDAV in Kentico

To enable WebDAV on your website:

1. Check, if your server meets the [requirements](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-webdav/webdav-requirements-and-limitations.md).
2. [Adjust theWebDAV Settings](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-webdav/adjusting-webdav-settings.md) in Kentico.

## WebDAV modes

Once you have enabled WebDAV, you can use it in two modes:

- **Edit mode** - represents integration of WebDAV editing in the Kentico user interface. Using this feature, files uploaded in Kentico can be opened for WebDAV editing by clicking the **Edit in client application** () icon.
- **Browse mode** - enables you to map a network drive in your operating system. Content of the network drive reflects the content of your website and you can edit website files just as if they were stored on a local drive.

Both modes also fully integrate with [workflow](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/managing-website-content/configuring-the-environment-for-content-editors/configuring-workflows.md) and [versioning](https://docs.kentico.com/k82/configuring-kentico/working-with-object-versioning.md) support in Kentico.
