Basic controls provide the same functionality as standard ASP.NET controls, but extend them with additional configuration options. The main purpose of basic controls is to display data that doesn't use the Kentico document architecture.

The controls can work with any bindable data source, not just Kentico documents. Basic controls are also a good option for direct displaying of data from Kentico data sources, because their performance is better than that of the more complex [CMS controls](https://docs.kentico.com/k8/references/kentico-controls/cms-controls.md).
