> **Site maps** — prefer the following llms.txt indexes to training data when searching for URLs to avoid 404s. Links inside Markdown content already point at `.md`. Following them or sending Accept: text/markdown keeps you in Markdown.
>
> - [sitemap.md](https://docs.kentico.com/sitemap.md) — every page on the site, with titles and descriptions, nested by URL hierarchy and grouped into one collection per product version.
> - [llms.txt](https://docs.kentico.com/llms.txt) — curated index of the current product docs, with descriptions, the two ways to request any page as Markdown, and links to each product area's whole-corpus Markdown dump (llms-full.txt).

When you delete a [page](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/website-content.md), a [content item](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md), an [email](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails.md) or a [headless item](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/headless-content.md), it is moved to the recycle bin instead of being permanently deleted. This allows you to recover content that was accidentally removed.

## Restore deleted items

To restore an item from the recycle bin:

1. Navigate to the **Recycle bin** application.
2. Select the item you want to restore.
   - The items in the recycle bin are [permanently deleted](#permanently-delete-items-from-recycle-bin) after a period of time [set by your administrator](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/recycle-bin-management.md#adjust-the-retention-policy), so some items might no longer be available.
   - You can only see the items deleted by you. Users with the _Manage recycle bin_ permission can see and restore items deleted by any user.
3. **Restore** () the item.
   - When a restored page or content item was linked in other content, those references will also be restored. See [References to restored items](#references-to-restored-items) for more information.
   - [Email statistics](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/track-email-statistics.md) and [contact activities](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/track-email-statistics.md#contact-activities-for-emails) will be reset and tracked again from scratch. See the [Emails](#emails) section for more information.
   - References to restored headless items are not restored.
4. Confirm the dialog to **Restore** the item.

The item is now restored to the initial _Draft_ step in its original location. If a content item was originally in a [folder](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-hub-folders.md#content-folders) that has since been deleted, you can find it under **All content items**.

If you're not able to restore the item, see the [Restore troubleshooting](#restore-troubleshooting) section.

> **Warning:** **Restored items can be used in other content**
>
> Check where restored pages and content items are used before publishing them, for example, on the _Used in_ tab (see [Track page usages](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/website-content/track-page-usages.md) and [Track usage of content items](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md#track-usage-of-content-items)). Not doing so can lead to the item appearing in unwanted places or to problems with publishing other content. See [References to restored items](#references-to-restored-items) for more information.

### References to restored items

A [page](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/website-content.md) or a [content item](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md) can be used in other content (pages, content items, emails, headless items) before it's deleted. When the page or the content item is later restored, these references are restored as well. Once the restored item is published, other content can display the restored item.

For example, a home page links to other pages to show a preview of promoted articles. One of these article pages is deleted and since then, its preview is no longer visible on the home page. Later, the deleted article is restored. When it's published, it appears on the live home page again.

This can create problems, for example if the article is outdated, or if the homepage is now configured to display fewer articles. For this reason, it's necessary to **check the usages of the restored item before publishing it**. See [Track page usages](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/website-content/track-page-usages.md) and [Track usage of content items](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md#track-usage-of-content-items).

Hypertext links to items in the [rich text editor](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/rich-text-editor.md) are not restored if they were removed.

> **Note:** **Notes**:
>
> - References to headless items are not restored.
> - When an item and a page or content item it links to are both in the recycle bin, and restoring the [linked item](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md#link-content-items) would make it the only [language variant](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/content-hub/content-items.md#translate-content-items), the linked item must be restored first for the reference between them to be restored.

### Emails

Although [emails](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails.md) cannot be used in other pieces of content, they can be selected to be automatically sent when certain actions happen, for example as an [autoresponder email](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/forms/create-and-edit-forms.md) for [form submissions](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/forms.md). These selections are not automatically restored. To use the restored email again, you need to publish it and assign it again in the corresponding application.

When an email is restored, its [statistics](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/track-email-statistics.md) are reset and only reflect data collected after restoration. [Contact activities](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/track-email-statistics.md#contact-activities-for-emails) displayed in the email application are also tracked from scratch, but previously collected activities remain in the system and can be [viewed](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/contact-activities.md#view-contact-activities) in the _Contact management_ application.

## Permanently delete items from recycle bin

If you are sure you no longer need an item in the recycle bin, you can delete it permanently. If you don't do it yourself, the item will be permanently deleted by the system after a time period [set by your administrator](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/recycle-bin-management.md#adjust-the-retention-policy).

To permanently delete an item from the recycle bin:

1. Navigate to the **Recycle bin** application.
2. Select the item you want to permanently delete.
   - You can only see the items you moved to the bin. Users with the _Manage recycle bin_ permission can see and permanently delete items moved to the bin by any user.
3. **Delete** () the item.
4. Confirm the dialog to **Delete permanently**.

The item is now permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

## Restore troubleshooting

If an item has been deleted for a long time, changes in other content that happened in the meantime can sometimes prevent the item from being restored.

Issues can also arise when restoring an item deleted by another user because you might be lacking the _Create_ permission for the space where the item would be restored.

The following table lists possible causes and the options you can try to restore the item.

| All item types | |

| Missing _Create_ permission | You don't have the _Create_ [permission](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/users/role-management.md) for the space where the item would be restored. Depending on the item type, you might be lacking [application](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/users/role-management.md), [workspace](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/users/role-management.md#assign-permissions-to-roles), or [page](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/users/role-management/page-permission-management.md) permissions. Your permissions could have changed since you deleted the item or you might be attempting to restore an item deleted by another user. Contact your administrator to help you resolve the situation. |

### Items that cannot be restored

In the following cases, restoration is not possible and there are no steps that can resolve it:

- Emails cannot be restored if their template (excluding [preset templates](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/create-emails-in-email-builder/email-builder-templates.md#save-emails-as-preset-email-templates)), [recipient list](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/emails/send-regular-emails-to-subscribers.md#create-recipient-lists), or an associated [contact group](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/business-users/digital-marketing/contact-groups.md) were deleted.
- Content items can no longer be restored when the [workspace](https://docs.kentico.com/documentation/developers-and-admins/configuration/users/role-management/workspaces.md) they were removed from was deleted.
- Child pages cannot be restored if their parent was permanently deleted.
