You can install Kentico CMS from the command line without any user interface and user interaction involved using the Silent Install tool. This tool also allows you to modify an existing installation and add or remove components contained in this installation. You only need to prepare a configuration XML file and execute a command from the command line with this XML file as a parameter.

The main purpose of the tool is the possibility of automated installation and modification of Kentico CMS.

Silent Install is capable of substituting the whole procedure including the installation of:

  • the program files,
  • new web project and IIS configuration,
  • new database on your SQL server,
  • sample websites based on available web templates.

The new Kentico Installer now substitutes the Silent Install tool. If you are looking for the Silent Install tool (for Kentico CMS 7.0 version before 5/2013), see the Kentico CMS 7.0 documentation for more information.

Silent installation procedure

  1. Create a configuration XML file. You have these options:
    • You can create an XML file during the custom installation process using the Save XML configuration link. This way, you can comfortably set all the options you need in the Installer UI and the XML file will be generated automatically for you.

XML files generated by the Kentico Installer cannot be used with the previously used Silent Install tool and vice versa.

    • You can download a package from http://www.kentico.com/downloads/SilentInstallSampleXML_7_0.zip with sample XML files and edit one of them to suit your needs.
      • This package also contains the SilentInstall.xsd file, which is an XML schema file defining the configuration XML file format. You can use it to validate the XML configuration file you have created.
You can find a reference on the required format of the configuration XML file in the Silent Install xml configuration topic.

  2. Copy the XML file to the folder containing Kentico CMS Installer (KenticoCMS<version>.exe).
  3. Execute a command with the Kentico<version>.exe <configuration XML file name>.xml syntax in the folder:

    Kentico_7_0.exe CorporateSite.xml

The installation will be executed and carried out according to the configuration in the XML file.

The log file

If the Silent Installation crashes without explanation, try searching for the log file in the default locations: C:\Program Files (x86)\KenticoCMS\7.0\ or the Installer folder.
